When Disney asked me to retell Cinderella for her 75th anniversary, I thought I knew the story. I'd seen the 1950 film a hundred times growing up. I could hum the songs. I could quote the Fairy Godmother.
But sitting down to actually write Cinderella — to choose every word a brand-new generation of readers would meet her through — I realized something I'd missed. The lesson at the heart of Cinderella isn't about the glass slipper or the ball or the prince. It's about who you choose to be when life is unfair.
Cinderella is treated cruelly. She could become cruel back. She doesn't. That's the part I wanted my own daughters to feel — that kindness isn't weakness, that integrity is a choice you make every day, and that hope can carry you further than circumstance.
Writing Cinderella is also what inspired me to create Millie Magnus — a heroine who has Cinderella's heart of kindness, but who picks up where Cinderella's lessons leave off. Where Cinderella endures, Millie acts. Where Cinderella waits, Millie speaks up. They're sisters, in a way. And every parent who loves Cinderella for her heart will find a chapter-book friend in Millie.

Cinderella's most enduring lessons are kindness, courage, hope, integrity, and treating others well even when life is unfair. The story teaches children that their character — how they choose to act — is what truly defines them, not their circumstances.
