There's a particular kind of magic that happens when a real, living author walks into a classroom. The book on the shelf suddenly has a face. The kid in the back who never raises their hand asks the best question of the day. And every student leaves thinking, just a little bit, "maybe I could write a book too."
I'm Brittany Mazique — a Disney author and the creator of the Millie Magnus chapter book series — and school visits are one of my favorite parts of this job. This page answers the questions teachers and librarians ask me most, so you have everything you need to decide whether a visit is right for your students and how to make it happen.
Does Brittany Mazique do school visits?
Yes — and gladly. I'm available for school visits, library presentations, and virtual author events nationwide. My programs are interactive, high-energy, and built around the things I care about most: reading for joy, the writing process, creativity, anti-bullying and self-confidence, and the importance of representation — kids getting to see themselves in the books they read.
I've written for Disney (Walt Disney's Cinderella: 75th Anniversary Edition, The Little Mermaid: Adventures on Land, and the Tiana and Snow White stories) and created Millie Magnus, an exuberant third-grader who has been praised by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Booklist, and School Library Journal. Kids know these characters — and that recognition makes for an electric room.
What grade levels are the visits for?
My programs are designed for grades K through 5, and I tailor each presentation to the age group in front of me. For the youngest students (kindergarten through second grade), I lean into storytelling, imagination, and an animated read-aloud. For older readers (grades 3 through 5), we go deeper into the writing process — where ideas come from, how a character like Millie gets built, and how to push through the part where writing feels hard.
If you're scheduling multiple sessions across grade bands in one day, I'll adjust each one so no group gets a presentation pitched over or under them.
What happens during a typical school visit?
A typical visit runs 45 to 60 minutes and usually includes:
- An interactive read-aloud — students don't just listen; they predict, react, and participate.
- My story — how a kid who loved books grew up to write for Disney, including the parts that weren't a straight line.
- The writing process, made real — an age-appropriate peek behind the curtain at how a book actually gets made, from messy first idea to finished cover.
- Open Q&A — almost always the kids' favorite part, and mine. Their questions are wonderful.
The goal is never just entertainment (though we do have fun). It's for every student to walk out believing their voice and their stories matter.
What topics can the presentation focus on?
I can shape a visit around whatever your students need most right now. Common themes include:
- Reading for joy — building lifelong readers, not just compliant ones.
- The writing & publishing process — perfect alongside a classroom writing unit.
- Anti-bullying & self-confidence — built around Millie Magnus Won't Be Bullied, ideal as an assembly during bullying-prevention month. (See my guide to anti-bullying books for kids for the bigger picture.)
- Representation — why it matters for kids to see themselves on the page, a theme close to my heart and my work serving Black and brown children in marginalized communities.
Do you offer virtual author visits?
Yes. Virtual visits over video conferencing are a wonderful option — they make an author visit accessible to schools anywhere in the country, they're easier to fit into a tight schedule, and they cost less than bringing me in person. The interactive read-aloud, the behind-the-scenes story, and the Q&A all translate beautifully to a screen. Many schools that aren't a short drive from the D.C. area start with a virtual visit.
How much does a school visit cost?
Fees depend on a few things: whether the visit is in-person or virtual, your location, how many sessions you'd like, and the size of the audience. Virtual visits are generally the most affordable option. I also try hard to work with schools across a range of budgets — including Title I schools and those serving marginalized communities, which are exactly the schools I most want to reach. The honest answer is that I'd rather have a conversation than quote a number cold, so tell me about your school and I'll put together something that works.
How far in advance should I book?
Four to eight weeks of lead time is ideal, and earlier is better for the busy windows: Read Across America (early March), World Read Aloud Day, Black History Month, and the start of the school year. One date to flag specifically — the next Millie Magnus book, Millie Magnus Is NOT Jealous, launches in September 2026, and fall visits tend to fill up fast around a new release. If you're eyeing the fall, reach out sooner rather than later.
Free resources to extend the visit
A great author visit shouldn't end when I log off or drive away. I offer free downloadable discussion guides for the Millie Magnus series — each one packed with discussion questions, vocabulary words, classroom activities, and a writing prompt. Teachers use them to build anticipation before a visit and to keep the conversation going afterward. You can grab them on the educator resources page.
